A Bangkok boutique hotel perfectly illustrates the difference between ‘budget’ accommodation in West and East. In countries like the United Kingdom, ‘budget’ accommodation is the moniker given to places such as the Premier Inn and Travelodge. Cheap and cheerful rooms with no frills and sadly, no thrills either. You get a room but are forced to pay fairly extortionate rates for breakfasts that are cooked hours before and reheated. In Bangkok, the boutique hotel is considered to be ‘budget’ because it’s affordable to tourists. Although a Bangkok boutique hotel is more expensive than a Travelodge room, they are worlds apart in more ways that one.

Perhaps it’s because the relatively low cost of living in Thailand makes such locations affordable to non-high fliers. When someone books into a 5-star hotel, they expect to be treated like a Hollywood star. Instead, most guests are herded like sheep into the rooms.
